A slice of history set fire in Helsinki

Written by beaufortmagazine – 19.2.2014

In 1900 a prominent, new boathouse was built on Liuskaluoto (Skifferholmen) island. The shed, known as Itävaja (Östra skjulet) was the heart of the HSS yacht club up until 2013.

Few days ago on the 11th of June the building set ablaze for still unknown reasons. Despite club members’ struggles to fight the fire, the heat grew intolerable and in seconds, through a supposed explosion, all hell broke loose.

This was not the first time flames raged on the island. During the last century fire has damaged buildings on three separate occasions. Luckily, last tuesday all the yachts were already in the water. Nevertheless, equipment, sails and masts of irreplaceable classics were torched to dust.

Yet we know that like the phoenix the club will rise from ashes and regain new heart. Bon courage HSS!
